Jim Tressel will undoubtedly have to show us all his cards in the very near future. The 2nd winningest coach in Buckeye history ‘resigned’ as the head coach today, but only leaves the program with a huge black-eye, a single National Championship and more baggage than Tiger Woods in a confessional.
And sadly, but most obviously, this isn’t the sort of thing the NCAA or college football needs right now.
One of the largest and most historic athletic institutions in the country was blatantly lying about simple infractions with major players. This isn’t a ‘Nobody is above the law’ scenario. It IS a University of Phoenix doctor saying ‘I think there may be a problem here’.
And it just makes me feel bad for the guy that got this thing all publicized, Terrelle Pryor. Now you’re the goat for ALL of Ohio if the team loses in the first four, whoops FIVE, games (when he’s suspended), AND then if they lose when you come back.
[Can you imagine if they lose to Michigan, Big Blue?] An NFL lockout sounds pretty good right about now.
But the ol ball coach and the rest of Buckeye Nation won’t be out in the cold. Tressel will most likely get a gig analyzing from the booth and the team will continue to produce perennial winners on the gridiron.
Plus he’s got enough sweaters to go around.
Dear Dr. Pure,
ReplyDeleteWhile I think your opinions about Jim Tressel are valid and that the insinuations about NCAA cover-ups are legit and I agree with them, I have to say your inaccuracies are pretty terrible for someone trying to be a journalist.
First, the University of Phoenix doesn't have a doctoral-crediting medical school. So your reckless claim makes your look like a fool. Consider that the current President and CEO of an Alaskan gold mining company and former Chairman, CEO, and President of three separate South African natural resource companies has his MBA from this school. While making fun of TV college commercials is easy, you should seek facts. And while this is your opinion, you as a journalist should seek the truth, not just write what will appeal.
Also, Pryor was suspended for five games. I respect your thoughts and only want to offer constructive criticism.
To Mr. or Ms. Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteI find it hysterical that a program that is symbolically and thus ironically transparent can be so downright oblivious to all of what has happened, and the NCAA didn’t help either; that was the gist of the whole post.
(I cannot believe I have to argue this point, because IT WAS A JOKE) I was not taking a dig at PU, the University of Phoenix. I do know that this prestigious institution does not offer an MD program, and I also know that the MBA program is good, even great. The Big Aristotle, Shaq even got his MBA there.
So to utterly ruin the joke, and explain it, here it goes….
They have a good business school, but there is no way I’m going to let Mr. O’Neil MBA handle my portfolio.
It’s the same way if they had a medical doctorate program. I can see the interaction now…
Doctor: “Sir, it looks like we need to take your tonsils out.”
Me: “Um…. Okay. I trust you, I saw your degree on the wall from The University of Phoenix. I love Arizona, it’s so cheery in the summer time.”
Doctor: “Actually I got it when I was living in Tennessee, Chattanooga Campus, while I was also working part-time as a pizza boy.”
-Silence-
Me: “I think I’ll just tough this one out doc.”
